Nolberto Olaya’s family farm, La Cinta, sits in the hills of Planadas, Tolima, about 40 km from the town center. He’s been growing organic coffee for years and was part of ASOPEP (a local organic farmers' group) from 2010 until 2018. He left to have full control over the farm and explore new opportunities. Since then, Nolberto has boosted income, improved transparency, and helped five other local farms switch to organic coffee.
At 1,700 meters above sea level, La Cinta spans 8 hectares of coffee plants and is fully equipped for coffee processing, drying, and quality control. His son, Jefferson, a certified Q Grader, helps fine-tune post-harvest processes, while his wife, Eloina, and daughter, Marcela, make and sell chocolate from the farm’s cacao production.
Nolberto is big on sustainable farming, using compost, coffee pulp, cane sugar molasses, and even calcium-rich ashes to boost soil health and protect his delicate coffee varieties.
