Finca Mierisch is a third-generation coffee-producing family, led by Dr. Erwin R. Mierisch and his wife, Maria Ligia McEwan de Mierisch. Their legacy is carried forward by their children, Erwin Jr., Eleane, and Steve, who have been deeply involved in the coffee world since the mid-2000s. Their participation in the Cup of Excellence program as organizers, judges, and competitors taught them the dedication and effort needed to produce exceptional coffee.
Today, Fincas Mierisch operates nine farms in Nicaragua and three in Honduras, with the Honduran farms sitting at higher altitudes than their Nicaraguan counterparts. Among these is La Alita, located right behind their award-winning Santa Lucia farm. The name "La Alita" (meaning "Little Wing") was inspired by the family’s love for Jimi Hendrix.
La Alita is perched at 1450-1550 meters above sea level and was first planted in 2014 with varieties like Orange Bourbon, Ethiosar, and Red Catuai. The farm benefits from ideal conditions for growing high-quality coffee, including silty clay soil that boosts nutrient and water retention, significant rainfall, and shade-grown plots that thrive at its altitude.
La Alita is closely linked with Finca Mierisch’s other Honduran farms, Cerro Azul and Santa Lucia. The three farms operate as a connected system: the wet mill and greenhouse with raised drying beds are located at Santa Lucia, while Cerro Azul houses the cupping lab, warehouse, and additional drying patios. This close proximity allows seamless coordination and movement between the farms, ensuring efficiency and maintaining quality.
The Mierisch family's commitment to excellence was recognized with a 1st place finish in the 2019 Cup of Excellence for a Washed Gesha from Santa Lucia. With its meticulous cultivation practices and dedication to quality, La Alita embodies the same standards that have made Finca Mierisch a name synonymous with exceptional coffee.
